On June 18, the North Kingstown Democratic Town Committee (NKDTC) hosted its summer fundraiser, An Evening with Seth Magaziner at Back 40 in North Kingstown.
The NKDTC was grateful to have U.S. Representative Magaziner as this year’s guest speaker and fondly remembered last year’s speaker, North Kingstown’s own Nellie Gorbea, RI Secretary of State from 2015 to 2023.
Last fall, many NKDTC members volunteered for Magaziner’s second congressional district campaign, “one of the most competitive House races in New England,” according to The New York Times. Representative Magaziner’s devotion to Rhode Island is highlighted by his impressive legislative career as two-term General Treasurer to his 2023 win for the congressional seat left by beloved and longtime U.S. Representative Jim Langevin, who did not seek reelection in 2022.
At Back 40, Magaziner took time to really talk with event attendees and other restaurant goers. Midway through the evening, he addressed the crowd with gratitude while noting the NKDTC’s dedication to supporting and helping North Kingstown elect quality Democrats.
“Celebrate the successes and tell the stories.” Magaziner reminded the crowd. He shared that people don’t always know about the great things happening at the state level and suggested the NKDTC help share the good news.
Need a start? How about the recent passing of the Reproductive Privacy Act to codify Roe v. Wade into Rhode Island state law? Better yet, remind folks that Democrats get things done and that the Republican agenda is the extreme agenda.
Looking forward to next year with a goal of taking back Congress, Magaziner said, “It’s never too early to start organizing.” And with the good turnout and energy shown at this fundraiser, it's clear that's exactly what the NKDTC intends to do.
Anne Geertman, Chair of the NKDTC, summed up the evening and the committee’s fundraising efforts, “Our fundraising events are a great way to get voters excited about the upcoming election and understand the importance of electing Democrats to local office. North Kingstown deserves great schools, transparent government, and a strong community where families and businesses can thrive. In 2022, the NKDTC organized and built the infrastructure to help elect Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.
The funds we raised helped print signs, mailers, and canvassing materials as well as promote candidates and our shared Democratic values. There's still work to do before the next election. Our fundraising efforts will continue through next year so that we can build support to win again in 2024.”
