Worried about rising tides? Or maybe you've heard about it, but don't think it matters to you? A photography exhibit of the local effects of climate change — erosion, rising tides along the shore, wildfires in the hills, longer summers, snowless winters — will be on display at the North Kingstown Free Library, September 15 to October 25, 2024. Organized by a committee of concerned South County residents, the exhibit will feature climate photos from across South County.
Sally Kingsbury, one of the organizers, said "the changing climate is affecting all of us, no matter where we live, but sometimes we don't notice it because the small changes occur over time and then create a big change."
The exhibit will be accompanied by a series of lectures about the different ways climate impacts our lives and what can be done.
September 19 - Climate Change in North Kingstown, Teresa Crean, Director of Planning, Barrington, and NK resident
October 3 - How the Natural World is Changing Around Us, Jameson Chace, Professor, Salve Regina University,
October 10 - Keeping History Above Water, Margaret Back, Preservation Projects Manager, Newport Restoration Foundation.
October 17 - Your Home: Reducing Carbon Emissions and Enhancing Climate Resilience, Dave Caldwell, with Ryan Kopp and Rebecca Reeves, Stormwater Innovation Center.
Bob Vanderslice, another organizer, said, "We are a group of neighbors who want to bring attention to the environmental changes going on in southern Rhode Island. We think it's worth the effort to expand the audience, so please come join us.” People can do thisby attending the lectures and photo display.
Meg Kerr, another organizer, said, "We hope the event and lectures highlight how important the issue is. We intend this to be just the beginning of an important conversation, and people can help us continue it at climateconversationsri.com.
